Thoughts on Weblog.com and Life in General

Hummm,

Browsing through some of the posts regarding the unexpected demise of Weblogs.com and talking off the top of my pointed head over the stale dredges of what remains of morning coffee has me thinking.

Some cliches come to mind, "you get what you pay for" and "there's no such thing as a free lunch" pop into my head immediately. I have much more of a right to expect reasonable warning if I am willing to pay a reasonable fee [in either the currency of the land or the sweat of donated labor] than I do if I simply grab a free ride.

So I suppose there are some things I need to remind myself of by reciting them with a big finger pointing straight at my own forehead.

I need to:

  1. take responsibility for my own well being.
  2. be willing to support what I believe in, use and/or enjoy. There is a price for everything in the long run.
  3. keep an eye to the future and realize that change will happen, it's right in there with death and taxes. Consider possible situations, both good and bad. Have a plan to address them, especially when they happen suddenly.
  4. not expect others to do for me what I can, with a bit of effort or cash, do for myself.
  5. stay current on issues and continue trying to educate myself regarding things that might be interesting or important in my little corner of the world.
  6. remember that with all the bumps and bruises that may happen along the way, most of all, learn how to enjoy the ride.

That's life, folks. Enjoy it, learn from it, and always cover your own butt. Don't expect anyone else to do it for you tomorrow just because they are graciously doing it today.

Isn't it funny what odd thoughts a little blog browsing will start stirring in my brain. If I don't write them here, they will evaporate long before noon, like early morning dew. And I need those reminders since I am not consistently good at any of them.

Time to run a backup and "do the homework" that is important to my being able to practice what I preach before I, once again, sidetrack myself.

TaTa for Now,

Farron

The Dreaded Beetles Are Back!

Just a quick comment to say that first damage and first few Japanese beetles were spotted about 7:00 AM this morning. And it's still damp and the sun is not on the garden until later in the day. Those little monsters like hot, sunny afternoons, not cool, damp mornings.

Swarms expected soon. Boo Hoo! Farewell to the Roses may come early this year. I am mourning all the little buds that may not be allowed to grow into roses.

Farron

UPDATE: I removed all of the rose bushes down to the canes on June the 6th. Those nasty bugs will not be getting a free lunch inside my patio this year. I believe the roses were allowed a wee bit of dignity in passing instead of having to display ugly, chewed stumps where buds had opened only hours before. Rest in peace little fellas and I hope I will see you for a small blooming spurt in the fall.
